Have only recently started watchng this series, and surprisingly I prefer it to the Jonathan Ross version. I'm finding the live discussion format much more watchable than Wossy's scripted reviews straight to camera, and Winkleman is not as annoying as I was expecting. Also good that they ditched the ass-kissing star interviews and on-set features. What is annoying is how she and Danny Leigh constantly apologise to each other and the viewer for their negative opinions on a film. Aside from that, a decent stab at a film show . . .

Only seen the latest one. It's pretty light fare and Winkleman has an annoying way of talking, somewhere between patronising and condescending.

I'll probably watch it again though.

I can't stand the woman, they should have given it to Mark Kermode a real film critic.

I dunno, I quite like the mix of someone representing the 'average cinemagoer' (I assume that's what's she's meant to be?) and a professional film critic.

To be honest I'm tiring of the Kermode / Mayo Wittertainment shtick - padded out with tiresome injokes (Benjamin Sniddlegrass was never funny, don't encourage him!) and silly shit from the listeners (I don't fucking care if someone rustled a bag of sweets while you were in the cinema!!!) . . .

I hear you. I genuinely enjoy Kermode's reviews. At the end of the day it's subjective, but he really does have very broad knowledge of cinema and first and foremost he's a horror fan, which is no bad thing.

I also like the interviews that are conducted as they get quite a mix bag of producers, directors, actors, etc. And Mayo is a very good interviewer.

What riles me is the petite bourgeois pedantry that the listeners and Kermode spend half of the show laughing about knowingly. It tells you something about the demographic of the show that 5 Live want to represent on air I think judging by the emails and tweets that are read out.

But regardless I still listen to the podcast whereby I can skip through the guff.

I much prefer Radio 4s Film Programme, which does take itself seriously (but this ain't no bad thing). It's a shame it's only for 30 mins, but more often that not those 30 mins are an enriching experience about new and old cinema.

Re: Film 2011 - I agree Winkleman is definitely representing the non cinephile, but as I mentioned she has this primary school/child carer way of talking that rubs me up the wrong way. I'd prefer someone a bit more forthright to be honest and then as Slippery Jack mentioned you wouldn't get these half-assed apologetic movie discussions.

But when all's said and done I'm just happy that there is stuff available through mainstream outlets. My licence fee is going towards something semi-decent at least.
