Hi

Just watching the House of the Devil on Blu Ray - and it looks horrendous. I know it was shot on 16mm and meant to have a retro look but there is this layer of almost white noise (rather than grain) on top of the image for all of the dark scenes. It looks like bad analogue television interference. I don't think there is anything wrong with my set up as other blu rays play fine. Has anyone seen else got this film on blu ray? Can they confirm that their copy is this bad also?

Erik

I've got the Blu-Ray aswell, but i've got to say that i haven't had any such problem with the picture quality, maybe you've picked up a duff copy. I'd highly recommend an exchange.

I've got the Blu-Ray also and, while there is film grain, the image looks great. The graininess seems to faithfully reproduce the theatrical experience, so I'm happy with the disc.

I'm beginning to doubt if there is a flaw with my disc. The opening credits have some VERY grainy shots but the text of the credits looks pristine on top of it - so it looks like there is nothing wrong with the mastering. For example, freeze frame the shot at 05:11 when the names "with Mary McCann and John Speredakos" appears onscreen. The titles look fine but the grain on the main image is immense. Do you see, what I consider, to be a 'snow' type effect to the grain - looking like it's covered in a layer of tiny white particles?

I can live with it if I know it's intentional. But I'm going insane wondering if I have a dodgy copy - ignorance is NOT bliss in this case !! :)

Got my copy for free and very pleased with it :D

I noticed intentional-only levels of grain - and well done too, unlike that goofy shit pasted onto the two Grindhouse films . . .

I think this might be to do with the settings on your TV. I tend to have my TV set to the in-built "dynamic" setting (loads of contrast, loads of sharpness), and House of the Devil looked just as you describe with this setting on. But I've sometimes found "dynamic" to be a little too dynamic, and the other settings give a softer image and make less of the noise, which makes House of the Devil look more natural.

I've noticed the sharp white particles in some of the darker scenes in The Two Towers as well. Changing the TV settings away from dynamic solved that one too. So I'd say your disc is fine, but your set needs adjusting!
