What is your absolut favourite DVD-Release so far?
The one that you´d take to the island and play over and over again, the one, that fullfilled all your hopes and dreams about what the DVD could be like if done properly, the one that makes the movie geek inside you jump up and down every time you think about it (well, i´m going a little over the top here..)?

Well, i´ll start with four favourites of mine:

DAWN OF THE DEAD Anchor Bay
This is THE release i had been waiting and hoping for for years. And ANCHOR BAY absolutley nailed it. Every version available, every commentary desirable, DOCUMENT OF THE DEAD on top, wonderful cover-artwork. Thank you Anchor Bay!

VIDEODROME Criterion
My favourite Cronenberg movie. A movie i can watch again and again, and it still amazes me. The cover artwork is the best i´ve ever seen on any DVD. Great supplements and commentary. The TV-Talkshow with Cronenberg, Landis and Carpenter alonoe is worth the price.

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST Grindhouse Releasing
A movie you cant watch over and over again, unless you are desperately in need of a psychiatrist. But ths DVD is stunning. Its not just the movie itself, its about the strange phenomenon of its production, its success, its criminal charges, the stories of the actors and the crew involved, how it was marketed. Its so insightful in every aspect, you could almost write a diploma based on the materials on these discs. The bitterness of Roger Kerman opposed to Deodatos snobby grin in the video commentary, the incredibly funny Gabriel Yorke, the artwork, i coud go on. Amazing!

BLADE RUNNER Final cut
Well, no need to say anything else. If youre a fan of the movie, this is it. No discussion. You cant do this any better. (although the cover artwork kind of sucks, my oppinon)

Those are all great selections Barry...for me its gotta be THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE... I got the Pioneer R1 disc back in the early days of DVD - this was when the film was still unavailable/banned in Ireland, so to finally see it with a great clear image ( instead of the less than great VHS copy I had) AND have the option of hearing the director talk over the film, was some kind of miracle....At the time I felt the God of Cinema had left me into heaven for having to put up with the BBFC for so long...

The Alien Quadrilogy - I'm a sucker for extras and this one is jam packed with really good ones. Added to this the alternate longer cut of Alien 3 (which I really like) and you have a package made in heaven. Although Resurrection is, and always will be, utter pants.

Yes, you are so right! This set is wonderful. I also hate RESURRECTION. It´s got some ideas but after all is a travesty.

I think one of my favourites would have to be Brazil. I owned the Criterion laserdisc and was very happy that all the extras were carried over. An amazing DVD.

I second the mentions of DAWN OF THE DEAD, BRAZIL, and BLADE RUNNER.

I'd like to add the LORD OF THE RINGS extended sets and the FANTASIA ANTHOLOGY.

Totally and completely deeply love the 4 DVD Dawn Of The Dead set that Anchor Bay put out, I can only assume this is the one that you guys have mentioned a few times above.
Ken Foree was selling these autographed on his website a while back, I've considered getting a second copy of it more than once just to have a signed one. =)

Hands down my personal favorite DVD Release.



Others would include:

- For dork value alone, my 4 DVD set of Infernal Affairs trilogy from HK that's got them all in a slipbox with a string hasp like a legal document folder or something would be. Just cool packaging there.

- The 3 DVD Tin boxed set of Oldboy. I mean seriously, what else could you possibly want for extras on that puppy?

- Criterion's re-release of Salo last year. Not because it was such an amazing movie or anything, but just because I'd been trying to find and see that film for *YEARS* which is quite tricky when you live in the middle of South Louisiana and 3 hours from the nearest big city that might have ANYTHING hard to come by like that used to be. Ultimately, I think I might have been let down by it because I'd managed to read/hear EVERYTHING that happened in it already and had psyched myself up to believe it to be more than it was. But still, very glad to have finally gotten and watched it. Certainly a notable movie, if nothing else.

- The Alien Quadrilogy 9 DVD set mentioned above is really nice too. I love the first two films immensely and the other two are decent, depending on my mood. I really enjoyed some of the documentaries and information that was included in those sets. Very, very nicely done. Such a shame to watch that series of films become more and more pitiful with each installment at the hands of Anderson and so on... I, personally, have always wished that they would have made Alien 3 as the six issue comics run story had been when Dark Horse Comics first put it out. I'm talking about the black and white comics back in the early 90's I think. Great story I thought. Certainly would have put the series in a totally different direction from what happened.

Baron Munchausen (Terry Gilliam)

A fantastic remastered print that has been polished up which is a film I really love BUT it also has a fantastic set of extras and a brilliantly frank documentary abou the making of Munchausen that goes into all the production problems. Seriously I could not believe just how honest and frank some of the comments were!! Especially from the German producer who is especially critical of Gilliam as is Gilliam of the Italian production crew of whom he accused of syphoning the budget to buy expensive cars for themselves.
There is also a great picture in picture option were you can see lots of props and Gilliams artwork and notes whilst the film is playing.

A great disc for an underated film.

Howl, i purchased the DVD-edition shortly before they released the bluray, now i may have to upgrade... i feel the same about the documentary! so cool, that they actually got all the people involved back to talk about the troubled production. i remember a lot of bad blood going on in the press around Gilliam and Schuly back then. Now it seems Gilliam kind of made peace with the film and the production. The fillm after all is pretty amazing.

All the above (maybe not Two and a Half men and Ally McBeal, thanks for that), I'd add the BR release of A Clockwork Orange, spectacular transfer and great extras. I really wallowed in that disc.

Criterion's release of Lyndsey Anderson's If is another great one.

The Alien set is being released again on BR at the end of the year. A new version of Alien3 and even more extras. Hope they won't throw in the AvP films though.

The Vengeance Trilogy boxset.
Films and extras are awesome, but by far the coolest thing is having an Oldboy hammer bottle opener sat next to my remote controls.

Alien Quadrilogy Blu Ray in an Alien egg shaped box !!! . . .

The Lord of the Rings 4-disc Extended Editions. Aside from being some of my favorite films of all time, the documentaries, commentaries, artwork galleries, etc. are the most comprehensive of any DVDs I own or have seen.

The ichi the killer two disc blood pack is pretty good,just dont try and get the discs out to often...

Amazing packaging indeed.

I like the 3 disc special edition with the anime.
