Having just watched my DVD of Carpenter's The Thing on my new-ish big TV, I have realised what a bad transfer it is, so am looking for a replacement. I have the original R1 collector's edition that I bought about 10 years ago, so I presume it is the original version.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to which version has the best transfer. I have not got a HD DVD or Blu-Ray player, so standard DVD only please.
Any region.

Cheers

Mick

I had the Universal region 1 re-release which looked great, had all the extras ported from the Lase Disc release and can be picked up really cheap now

I replaced it with the HD version which is a revelation. If you ever make the plunge into HD it's a definite no-brainer.

It's release on HD DVD almost did make me take the plunge, but all the players are still very expensive in the UK (and I have bought two big flat screens and got a new baby in the past nine months, so I have to keep Mrs Mickeymoo sweet).

I have ordered the "2nd edition" collectors edition on R1 from DVD Pacific.

Thanks for the info

The newer Universal release with Anamorphic WS version (which is the one I own, and Amazon seems to be selling for 5.97...bargain!) is a great transfer, at least watching it at something honed to the native res. I can't vouch for upscaling or watching it on a screen bigger than that which it is intended for, but I can't imagine it'd look terrible on it.

I know how you feel. Got 2 offspring.

Never enough money for all the films you NEED and never enough time to watch them all :D
