I've gone for a couple of all out gore fests although one is animated, but still it's impressive enough.
Another two are just a lot more visceral and the last is just unadulterated eurgh.

1. Braindead - lawnmower ending.
2. Martyrs - flaying.
3. Fist of the North Star (animated movie with all of the exploding heads, chests stomachs, arms, etc. I was going to put Riki-Oh, but it's just too silly).
4. Antichrist - female circumcision. millstone on the cock.
5. Guinea Pig 2 - dismemberment.

How can no-one have Day of the Dead at number 1? Surely the greatest gore in cinema history!

1) Day of the Dead
2) Cannibal Holocaust (just for the skinning/castration at end- jesus I nearly threw up)
3) Braindead
4) Daybreakers- seriously, the last 20-30min were simply awesome! Surely a cult classic in the making
5) Ichi The Killer - was tempted to go for Audition but can't decide if its particularly gory, even if it is messed up!

4 zombies, 1 cannibal and a vampire flick. Those slasher and torture folk just can't cut it I guess.

1. day of the dead
2. Gurotesuku
3. À l'intérieur
4. the thing
5. the evil dead

and an honorable mention for Re-Animator, Frontière(s), Haute tension and martyrs.
France is pretty well represented. those crazy French people sure know how to make a good sadistic movie :)

I'm going to add another three, because I can 8) :

Shogun Assassin - blood spray
Irreversible - fire extinguisher and face
Riki-Oh - any of his punch through bodies and heads.

Is the curb stomping scene really that graphically gory? Agreed though, it is horribly shocking

"I said put your mouth on the curb!"

*Shudder*

I tend to think of Gore in terms of blood and guts, no matter how fake or realistic. So yeah, stuff like American History X is infinitely more disturbing than an explodey zombie movie but not as gorey.

I think it is great to see Phurius suggest Shogun and Riki-Oh... both those movies are pretty old and Riki is pretty laughable but talk about wall to wall blood. Ichi is another one I really support... you are knee deep in chunks of people sometimes.

I'm gonna have to add Piranha 3D to this, which I saw today.

Some AMAZING gore scenes, which I don't want to write down in case of spoilers, but I highly recommend a trip to your cinema for some great flesh and fish feasting with gallons of blood.

Hint: the Society of Amputee Surfers were used as extras!

Good call! Totally forgot about this film- awesomely violent. God I need to get this on DVD, not seen it since a battered old VHS in about 1992.

try and get the babycart series of films. (not wishing to appear rude and you might already know but shogun assasin was a cut and past of the 1st 2 films in the series)theres six alltogether and they are fantastic.

an odd ritual i have is that on both my sons birthdays i pick one of the six to watch. when my 1st son was born i spent the day watching babycart films before i could go back to the hospital to see my wife and child. kinda stuck as a trdition :?

I've watched the series too, but I've always had the biggest soft spot for Shogun Assassin as it's a bit like The Fist of the North Star feature, in that it's all about the bloodiness and violence.

That's a damn fine tradition to have though.

I think Audition's goriness is overrated. It is Miike's best film, but the gore is only featured for about 10-15 minutes. Compare that to Ichi the Killer which has gore in almost every scene. There's also Visitor Q, but it doesn't rely on gore - it's "just" breaking all the other possible taboos of cinema.

Gozu isn't too bad, but I wouldn't say it was gore-filled, certainly not in the same league as Ichi the Killer.

I've read a number of interviews were Miike has said that Visitor Q is a film about love and hope!
